There were a lot of moving parts to choreograph, and Ray was right: Ava liked the challenge. The map of St. Louis lay before them with red ink marking hotspots that had not been investigated and black ink marking the spots that had been checked out multiple times and had no sightings of the women or of Elizabeth.

Agent Redman answered a call and motioned to Ray. They moved to the side of the room to speak in private.

“There are a lot of red circles,” Ava said.

“It’s a big city,” Metford replied.

“Redman, take Vallo and Smits. Check the boat,” Ray said. “Local law is holding the owner at the precinct. Get to the docks before the local PD screws up the scene.” He motioned for them to get a move on.

“Local PD don’t screw up shit,” a man in street clothes said.

“Of course your boys wouldn’t shit all over a crime scene, Detective Washington. Not on purpose. But my orders still stand.” Ray clapped the detective on the shoulder. “Didn’t mean to offend. Why don’t you go with them? You know the place better than anybody.”

Detective Washington looked as if he wanted to say something more. He was irked by the comment and didn’t look like the sort of man who let things go easily.

“Detective, we’re all on the same team here. Time’s wasting. We need to get a move on. Do you have a problem accompanying my men?”

After a short pause, Washington shook his head. “No. No problem at all.”

“Good man,” Ray said, promptly turning away and moving to address Ava and her team.

“Little tension with local law enforcement?” Dane asked.

“Nah. Nothing out of the ordinary, anyway. He’s just pissed that we had a couple of agents here checking things out and he wasn’t notified. Seems he was investigating some low-level drug runners that are linked to our case.”

“And you told him to back off, and now he feels robbed by the FBI,” Dane scoffed.

“Something like that. Sounds like you’ve had a few run-ins with local PD.”

“NYPD. More times than I can count.”

“Those guys are the worst,” Ray groused.

“Are the leads solid?” Santos asked as she held up a paper.

“They are as solid as they come,” Ray told her. “We’ve already run the names and pulled the addresses. We just need boots on the ground and knuckles on doors. Need to check every one of them ASAP. Split the list however you want and report back to me with what you learn. We’ll be moving to the police station and setting up in their annex. When you report back, that’s where we’ll be headquartered.”

“There’s sixty names on this list,” Metford said. “That’ll take days, maybe weeks to work through. Most people aren’t eager to answer their door when an agent knocks.”

“That’s only the most relevant names from a much longer list, Agent Metford. This is a big city with lots of people. St. Louis is a hub for traffickers. If it takes us months, then we’ll be here until this case is closed.
